Founded by Mrs. Nalini Mukherjee, Dakshini Prayash derives its name from ‘dakshini’: its location on the south-eastern fringes of Kolkata; and ‘prayash’: never ending endeavour.
A skill training ecosystem was built for the adults in the community to enable them to become financially independent. The women were trained to make items like dusters, paper bags, cards, cushion covers, and more.
Scabies was completely eradicated from Madurdaha by 2000, and general health camps were regularized with the support of trusted medical professionals and organizations.
The first eye camp was organized by the Inner Wheel Club. Many people in the community were prescribed glasses and eye camps were conducted periodically thereafter.
The school was named Madurdaha Satyavritti Vidyalaya; ‘Madurdaha’: the locality, ‘Satya-Vritti’: truthfulness in thought, speech and action, ‘Vidyalaya’: school. The classes were moved from the local club to MSV’s own building.
Starting with 4 students under a tree, Madurdaha Satyavritti Vidyalaya reached its first 100 students in 2003 with classes from pre-primary to 5.
The second building for academic and skill training purposes was inaugurated in 2007 by Mr. P. M. John, the cofounder of Anatara.
HDFC Life funded the setup of a new dining room and library in the senior school building.
The strength of the teaching and administrative staff, along with the support team reached 50+.
Varshita Khaitan conceptualized and designed Dakshini Prayash’s logo. The logo represents the initials of the organization, which come together to form the symbol for ‘infinity’. The colour orange combines the energy of red and happiness of yellow.
The first extensive blood test camp for students was organized by Indopath. Under the expert guidance of doctors and nutritionists, the canteen menu was modified and students were prescribed proper supplements to meet their nutritional requirements.
12 students from the first batch of Madurdaha Satyavritti Vidyalya graduated from high school. Out of them 10 went to college, and 2 decided to get experience in the workplace.
The self-reliance team of 25+ women reached a milestone with having sold 10,000+ units of their handmade paper and cloth products. The highest selling items were paper bags and dusters.
To celebrate the life of Mr. Vishwanath Jalan, Vishwa Asha was initiated with the goal to take care of the elderly in the Madurdaha community.

25 years of growth, learning and service was celebrated in G. D. Birla Sabhagar, Kolkata. The theme for the event was ‘satat pravah’ meaning ‘continuous flow’. Kabir Cafe put up an energetic performance for our audience.
Funded and inaugurated by HDFC Life, a 1100 sq ft multipurpose indoor sports arena was built for the students in the senior school building.
A logo to represent the education wing of Dakshini Prayash was launched: 3 open books and a student, with the colours yellow, orange, and red for optimism, enthusiasm, and power respectively.
